1. Access the DET Portal by clicking on the link:
https://portal.det.nsw.edu.au
2. Open your email account
3. Click on 'New'
on the top left hand side
4. Click on the 'To'
button, which opens the GAL - Global Address List.
5. Click in the
Alias field
6. Type a 'tilde' (~)
which is done by holding down the 'Shift" and pressing the key above
the 'Tab' key.
7. Then enter your school
code next to the tilde.
8. Click on 'Find'
9. Select your class (PC)
or tick the box next to your class (Mac) from the list that appears
10. Click 'To' at the bottom of this window
11. Click 'Close'
12. In the subject box, type “Daintree Rainfall – Email Task”
13. Highlight all the text
in the Daintree Rainfall - Email Task
section below.
14. Copy and Paste this
text into your email text window.
15. Press 'Send'
- the lesson will then go to all students in your class.

3. Answer the following questions:
a) What does “Mean rainfall (mm)” mean?
b) The information relates to a number of years. Tell me over which years the mean rainfall (mm) has been collected?
4. Click on the icon of a graph on the right hand side of the table.
5. Answer the following questions:
a) What is the mean rainfall for February?
b) What is the mean rainfall for December?
c) Which season has the highest mean rainfall?
d) What is the difference between the mean rainfall in August and February?
6. Scroll down to the Data Comparator.
7. Click on the Monthly data for year: and change it to 2006.
8. Click on redraw.
9. You will now have a two series graph showing the mean rainfall (mm) and the rainfall (mm) for 2006 from May to December.
10. Answer the following questions:
a) Which months, in 2006, had a lower rainfall than the mean rainfall?
b) What is the difference between the mean rainfall for December and the rainfall for December 2006?
c) What is the total amount of rainfall from May 2006 to December 2006?
d) Is this higher or lower than the mean rainfall for May - December?
e) How much higher or lower is it?
11. Go back to the Data Comparator and click on Another climate statistic for this site.
12. Click on Redraw.
13. You will now have a graph that shows the mean rainfall (mm) and the mean maximum temperature (˚C)
14) Answer the following question:
a) You are planning a three-week holiday to Port Douglas. You want to go when there is a good chance of little rain and warm days above 26˚C. What would be the best month to holiday in Port Douglas and why?
