Stage Three  - Email Tasks - SMS Text Task


Teacher Instructions
1. Access the DET Portal by clicking on the link below:
https://portal.det.nsw.edu.au
2. Open your email account
3. Click on
'New' in the top left hand side
4. Click on the
'To' button, which opens the GAL - Global Address List.
5. Click in the
Alias field
6. Type a 'tilde' (
~) which is done by holding down the 'Shift" and Pressing the key above the 'Tab' key.
7. Then enter your school code next to the tilde.
8. Click on '
Find'
9. Select your class or tick the box next to it (Apple) from the list that appears below.
10. Click
'To' from underneath this window
11. Click
'Close'
12. Highlight all the text in the Email Task section below.
13. Copy and Paste this text into your email text window
14. Press
'Send' - the lesson will then go to all students in your class.


This means upto 30 emails will be returned to you - if you do not wish to reply to each individual email then repeat the steps 4-11 to send one email to email the whole class thanking them for their efforts.


Email Task
Your email task today is investigating the language of SMS. That is SMS abbreviations:
1.
READ THE WHOLE EMAIL FIRST
2. Click on the link at the end of the instructions
3. Select a letter for SMS language to investigate. Eg 'C'
4. Have a look through the abbreviations and their meanings
5. Have a look through some other letter as well...maybe 4 or 5
6. When you have completed all instructions click on 'Reply'
7. Answer the the questions below, by clicking at the end of the question and typing your answer.
8. When you complete the questions click on 'Send' to return your answers to your teacher
9. When you completed everything, send an email to one of your friends at schools using SMS langugae and send a copy to your teacher also.


Now that you have had a look at some words and their meanings answer the following questions in SMS language if can


Questions:
1. Did you find any abbreviations that you think may be inappropriate for you to use when sending emails while on the school system?
2. Why do you think that they may be inappropriate for school use?
3. Look at the set up of the home page. Is there anything there your need to investigate because you do not know what the button means?
4. Which buttons did you investigate?
5. What did you find out about those buttons?
6. Look at the right-hand side of the home page. What do you think the boxes and links are all about?
7. Do you think that it's a good idea to have these links on a website?
8. Why / Why not?
